Hi friends,

Here is this week’s list of what I’m exploring and thinking about. Feel free to forward this along to friends.

Book I’m rereading

The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. A controversial, but useful book. This is not for everyone, and I disagree with some of Tim’s ideas in it, but the underlying principle is something worth striving toward—to have flexibility with your own time. The notion of working a typical 9-5 job is waning away, especially after the coronavirus pandemic, and more people are now working remotely, regaining control of each day, and spending their time on things they want to spend it on.

What I’m learning

How to differentiate different types of injuries. I had my orthopedic fellowship class this past weekend and learned more in 2 days than in 2 months of physical therapy school. The main takeaway from this course is that a good physical therapist needs to be able to differentiate injuries of muscle, tendon, joint, nerve, or other pathological tissue. If we as PTs are not able to apply specific treatments to each patient, then the line between physical therapy and personal training gets blurred.

What I’m working on

Regaining a sense of awe and wonder for the world. Sam Harris said, “Boredom is simply a failure to pay attention.” I’ve been learning more about the natural world, as well as paying attention to the environment and people surrounding me to become more appreciative. When we were children we were curious about everything, asked many questions, and were easily amused. As we get older, we become more jaded and less interested in the world. My life has become more enriched by appreciating the little things in it a bit more—the relief from my head hitting the pillow after a long day, the first sip of coffee, the warmth of sunshine on my face. Give it a try, and regain your sense of awe.

Song that’s been on repeat

Surefire (Piano) by Wilderado.

Until next week,

Kevin
