October 27, 2024: Just Show Up
Hi friends,
If we always acted on what we feel like doing we would accomplish very little. Thoughts like “I don’t want to workout today,” and “I don’t want to write this newsletter right now” would stop any progress.
It doesn’t matter what you feel like doing now. Often, taking action will make you feel better and more motivated once you get going.
Think about Newton’s Law of Inertia, “An object in motion will remain in motion.” The hardest part is showing up consistently. It’s much easier to keep something going than it is to start.
Many think they need motivation to go to the gym. But if you relied on motivation alone to workout, you’d rarely make it to the gym.
I fight myself nearly every morning to go to the gym because I rarely “feel” like going, but I’ve made it a habit.
In his mega-bestselling book Atomic Habits, James Clear says "Your habits shape your identity, and your identity shapes your habits." To start a new habit like exercising, you need to make your identity as one who exercises.
Good workouts done consistently are superior to great workouts done sporadically.
If you become the type of person who shows up regardless of feelings, the results will take care of themselves.
If you’re thinking about making a new habit like exercising, reading, or writing, think about changing your identity to match the type of person you want to become. Then, focus on showing up consistently, regardless of what you feel like doing in the moment.
Until next week,
Kevin
✍️ Quote I’m reflecting upon
“A little quality work every day will produce more and more satisfying results than frantic work piled on top of frantic work.”
