November 17, 2024: Be Your Own Advocate
Hi friends,
The truth is, no one will advocate for your health like you can. Doctors and other healthcare providers are often overworked and overscheduled, leaving limited time to thoroughly investigate all potential issues or order every test that could benefit you.
Many times, it falls on you as the patient to be your own best health advocate.
My best advice regarding your health is to take it into your own hands. Start learning about how the body works. Learn the ways that it can break down, then avoid those like hell.
I’ve referred to it before, but Peter Attia’s book Outlive is a great starting point. Attia provides in-depth insights into common health issues like heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, metabolic disorders, and more.
In addition to Attia's work, several other health and wellness experts consistently produce excellent content to improve your health literacy:
Rhonda Patrick - Covers topics like nutrition, supplements, and the science behind longevity
Andy Galpin - Expertise in exercise science, muscle physiology, and athletic performance
Layne Norton - Specializes in evidence-based nutrition and fitness for general health and body composition
Andrew Huberman - Neuroscientist who shares insights on sleep, stress, brain health, and human performance
Investing time in understanding your body and how to optimize your health is one of the best things you can do, no matter your age or current health status.
The earlier you start, the greater the potential benefits. But it's never too late to begin prioritizing your physical well-being and taking an active role in your health.
Until next week,
Kevin
✍️ Quote I’m reflecting upon
“Sometimes success is less about making good habits easy and more about making bad habits hard.”
— James Clear, Atomic Habits
❤️ Things I’m enjoying
Book - The Almanack of Naval Ravikant by Eric Jorgenson. “I would rather be a failed entrepreneur than someone who never tried. Because even a failed entrepreneur has the skill set to make it on their own.”
Jacket - Patagonia Men's Down Sweater Hoody. A surprisingly warm jacket for only weighing 15 oz.
Life hack - Keep your phone away from your bed. I don’t know why it took me so long to do this but since I’ve moved my phone charger away from my nightstand, I no longer sit in bed scrolling when I should be sleeping. It also helps me wake up right away as I have to physically get up to turn the alarm off.
