January 12, 2025: When Everyone's a Health Guru

Hi friends,

Are You Drowning in Health Advice?

"This exercise will cure your knee pain!" claims one social media expert. "That same exercise will destroy your knees!" warns another. Without a doctorate in exercise science or physical therapy, how can you know who to trust?

While social media has certainly increased awareness about health and injury recovery, we need to approach the advice we encounter with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Many influencers oversimplify complex health issues—it boosts their engagement, but it can be misleading and potentially harmful.

It's natural to crave simple, clear-cut answers. However, rehab, health, and fitness rarely fit into neat boxes.

Take back pain, for instance. An oversimplified response might be, "You have arthritis, just stretch more." But the real answer is more nuanced. Back pain can stem from multiple factors, including:

  • Sleep quality

  • Genetic predispositions

  • Stress levels

  • Movement patterns that may put excess strain on certain areas

  • Muscle imbalances

  • Personal relationships and their effect on your mental and physical well-being

Here's the key: be wary of anyone offering quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions to complex health issues.

Before acting on any health advice you find online, verify it through reliable sources and, when necessary, consult with qualified healthcare professionals who can provide guidance based on your specific situation.

Until next week,

Kevin

❤️ Things I’m enjoying

  1. Podcast - My Blueprint For Setting Goals - The Game w/ Alex Hormozi. My takeaway from this episode is that we often forget that with each goal we set, there’s a price to pay. If you want to get fit, you will have to sacrifice going out to eat and potential time with loved ones. If you want to start a business, you will have to sacrifice the free time you would have with a corporate job. Tradeoffs are inevitable in life.

  2. Book - Build the Life You Want: The Art & Science of Getting Happier by Arthur Brooks. A useful guide on the science of becoming “happier.” Although genetics play a significant role in your baseline happiness levels, there are many tools and habits you can use to become happier. “Happiness is a combination of enjoyment, satisfaction, and purpose. To get happier is to get more of these elements, in a balanced way—not all of one and none of another.”

  3. TV show - The Lincoln Lawyer.
